THE CLUES! Arrrrh!

CLUE #1

Arrrrh you ready for the FIRST clue?
The SS Culligan, also known as the "Culligan truck," has been anchored
at the corner of Henry Street and Wayne Gretzky Parkway. Reports say
the crew has been frequenting a new store where they have washed their
clothes and have been seen hosting barbecues on the sTArboard side of
the SS Culligan trying to recruit new deck hands for their treasure
hunt.
The local store manager, Corsair Ken Neufeld, after becoming aware of
the stolen treasure from the Good Ship McDonald's, closed the doors to
the SS Culligan.
What is the name of this appliances store?
Be sure to record this clue on your grand prize ballot and watch for
the next five clues in your Monday copies of The Expositor.
Once all six clues have been given, the ballot can be dropped off at a
McDonald's restaurant in Brantford before Friday, Nov. 21, at 4 p. m.
The $10,000 draw will take place at Hooton's Landing (Hooton Pools and
Spas) on Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon. You must be present to win.

CLUE #2

Arrrrh you ready for the SECOND clue?
The SS Culligan has been sighted all over the city—cruising Mohawk Lake,
taking on water after a rain at the West Street subway and under sail on
West Street during last Friday’s visits to Brantford by Prime Minister
Stephen Harper and Liberal Leader Stephane Dion.
The politicians’ security guards paid no attention to the SS Culligan.
They thought the ship flying a Jolly Roger and manned by swabbies with
swords and eye patches were members of the media.
Treasure hunt contestant Buck N. Ear spotted the treasure ship sailing the
mighty Grand River off Kerby Island and watched as the SS Culligan headed
up D’Aubigny Creek, travelled west into the East Forest and anchored near
a model home on McGuiness Drive.
The crew wolfed down a magnificent turkey dinner in the company of Wendy
Easveld, pirate groupie and mistress of the home in the East Forest. The
turkey seemed kind of small. It wasn’t a parrot, was it?
What is the name of the company building homes in the East Forest?
Be sure to record this clue on your grand prize ballot and watch for the
next four clues in your Monday copies of The Expositor.

CLUE #3

Arrrrh you ready for the THIRD clue?
Pirates of all kinds had a disappointing week. They got excited Tuesday
when they saw citizens line up to place pieces of paper in sealed boxes
all over town. What were these valuable pieces of paper? Stocks? Cheques?
Money orders?
Imagine the pirates’ puzzlement when they opened the boxes. Inside were
ballots marked with Xs next to a list of names. Arrr! Yes. The pirates’
spirits lifted when they realized the ballots were mini-treasure maps
showing where X marks the spot.
After carefully examining hundreds of these little maps, the pirates now
are searching for someone named Phil McColeman, who received the most Xs
and is joining the SS Harper on a search for political gold in Ottawa.
Meanwhile, the crew of the SS Culligan, hungry as usual, has stopped at a
Lynden Road eatery which boasts that it serves the food of kings at a
price far less than a king’s ransom. The food must be good if royalty eats
there. Captain Julie Toy and first mate Paul Liu are serving a royal
feast.
What is the name of the eatery? It won’t take all the king’s horses and
all the king’s men to put together your answer.
Be sure to record this clue on your grand prize ballot and watch for the
next four clues in your Monday copies of The Expositor.
Once all six clues have been given, the ballot can be dropped off at a
McDonald’s restaurant in Brantford between Monday, Nov. 10, and Friday,
Nov. 21, at 4 p. m.
The $10,000 draw will take place at Hooton’s Landing (Hooton Pools and
Spas) with Capt. Hootliner and his mermaid companion, Wendy, on Saturday,
Nov. 22, at noon. You must be present to win.

CLUE #4

Arrrrh you ready for the FOURTH clue?
The crew of the SS Culligan have been feeling the heat from alert
Expositor readers. They’re looking forward to the one night of the year
when no one pays attention to their outlandish costumes, hooks and eye
patches. But Halloween is still four days away.
In the meantime, they have been searching for somewhere to stash the
treasure where no one will find it—like under a really big mattress.
So, this week the SS Culligan sailed to a store at Grey and Clarence
streets to buy a mattress and matching safety deposit box spring, perfect
for hiding treasure.
John and Lois Diakun are skippers of the store. First mates are Dorothy
Balicki, Lorraine Pike, John Diakun Jr., Heather Miller and Stacey
Ammerman.
What is the name of this store? If you close your eyes, the answer will
come to you.

CLUE #5

And now for today’s clue.
As the days have grown shorter and the nights have become colder—so cold
that they shiver Peg Leg’s timbers—the SS Culligan crew has longed for the
lush, tropical surroundings of their Caribbean home.
They have scouted the north end of Brantford for a store that sells plants
and everything a pirate needs to build garden lagoons.
Their ship flying the Jolly Roger (or Personable Row-jay) has sailed,
strangely undetected, east on Lynden Road, then south on Roy Boulevard.
The SS Culligan has anchored at an oasis of greenery skippered by Admiral
Syd and his crew of Tony Frisoli, Harold Bunge, Kathy Munn and Jason
Brothers. (Jason is just one person. His name is Brothers.)
Everyone, pirate and non-pirate, is invited to Ponders Night this
Thursday. It’s an evening of fun and prizes for people who build ponds,
not people who like to contemplate.
What is the name of this business?

CLUE #6

Arrrrh you ready for the SIXTH AND LAST clue?
The swabbies of the SS Culligan this week met up with a veteran
swashbuckler (“our motto: every swash buckled or double your swash back”)
by the name of Black Bartle.
Over the years Black Bartle has accumulated an Aladdin’s cave of wonderful
products at his mansion on St. Paul’s Avenue.
Products include a beard-colouring lotion called Just For Pirates, a
favourite of Bluebeard who says “I left just a touch of blue.”
Other big sellers are Arrrrspirin, eye patches, hook polish and remedies
for parrot fever.
The business’s first mates are Sonya, Marnie, Bernie, Nancy, Randy and Jane.
The business once was called Black Bartle’s. What is the business called now?
